Review Goals - Butterfly shows how to do it lightlyIt’s October (already). The seasons are changing – and there are just under 3 months left of they year and it’s a great time to review goals. What did you want to get done this year? How are things going?

Before I go any further I’d like to stress ONE thing. Always remember that your goals are there to INSPIRE you, not to beat yourself up with.

So, if you’re on track with your goals – lucky you. And if you feel like your goals have gotten away from you, that’s OK. Life happens. Stuff happens. We tend to overestimate what we can achieve anyway.

Now, these next 3 months (or 2 months if you celebrate Christmas because not much gets done after mid-December anyway) will go by in a flash. So, this is a perfect time to simply ‘take stock’ – to review goals, your progress and refocus on what’s really important to you.

It’s helpful to first review what you HAVE achieved – and to take a moment to celebrate and applaud the hard work it took to get there. So, if you like, you can first make a list of what you’ve achieved so far this year. You may be surprised when you look at the list at how much you have already done!

Question to Help You Review Goals:

So, if you’re on track with your goals ask these questions (in order):

  1. “What are my 3 biggest priorities for the rest of the year?”
  2. “Are my goals still inspiring? What might I need to change?”
  3. “What do I need to do ensure everything gets finished up smoothly and easily?”

And if your goals have gotten away from you, ask these questions (in order):

  1. “What are my 3 biggest priorities for the rest of the year?”
  2. “What would inspire me and is reasonable! to achieve or get finished this year?”
  3. “What is MOST important that I finish?”
  4. “What might I need to let go of (could be a goal or something else in your life) to achieve my goals?”

AND remember this paradox: Goals are important. They help us to create the life circumstances we want and we can get great satisfaction and temporary happiness from achieving them. But when we are too focused on goals – striving to achieve them – we are merely pursuing happiness. When we try too hard to achieve our goals, we stop enjoying the journey and happiness becomes a destination, instead of always being with us. I know which I prefer!

“Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.”  Nathaniel Hawthorne
